Hey everybody, quick shout out to my fellow ADHD peeps! Does anyone else feel like clothes are constantly plotting against you? Like, clothes are supposed to be soft and stuff, but most of it is just CRUNCHY. I swear my brain registers every single thread.
Condition:
ADHD (Focus on Sensory Over-Responsivity)
Effect on People Involved:
This sensory stuff, right? It means I own like 5 shirts. ONLY 5. Because if the fabric is scratchy, or the tag is stabbing, or the waistband is too tight, it becomes the ONLY thing I can think about. It’s a literal distraction. My family used to get so mad when I’d rip the seams out of new clothes. They thought I was destroying stuff, but I was just trying to survive the day, lol.
Problems Solved:
I only buy 100% cotton or super-soft fleece. I cut out ALL tags the second I buy something—scissors are my friend. And I found this shop (shoutout to Spectrum Threadz!) that focuses on comfort fabrics, so my wardrobe is smaller but 100% safe. Solved the constant low-level irritation that used to eat up half my focus.
Ongoing Challenges:
Laundry. Ugh. If my favourite sweater isn’t clean, I have to cycle through the ‘less good’ shirts, and it just throws off my whole day’s comfort level. Plus, finding work-appropriate sensory-safe clothes is still a nightmare. It’s all stiff shirts and tight pants out there!
