How to Write Your Life Stories for Your Grandchildren

A Simple, No-Stress Guide for Grandparents Over 60 (PDF & ePUB Download)

Your grandchildren will not remember perfect commas. They will remember the sound of your voice on the page.

If you’ve ever thought, “I should write my stories down before it’s too late,” but then stopped because you’re “not a writer” — this book was made for you.
How to Write Your Life Stories for Your Grandchildren is a simple, no-stress guide for grandparents over 60. Not a memoir course for aspiring authors. No plot structure, no software, no grammar lessons. Just a proven way to save the stories you already tell at the kitchen table.

Author Trevor Stephenson watched too many families lose their best stories to “I’ll do it properly someday.” So he created Story Blocks — a method that turns any memory into a finished, five-minute story in about 20 minutes, with a pen, paper, and the words you already use.

You do not need a computer. You do not need talent. You need one memory and the desire to save it.

STOP WAITING FOR PERFECT. START WITH DONE.

Perfection says wait until you take a class, wait until your memory is clearer, wait until you have time. Done says write what you remember today.

Your family doesn’t want a polished book. They want your handwriting. Like a recipe card with a stain on it — the imperfection IS the connection.

This book gives you permission to:

  • Write badly on the first draft
  • Forget exact dates
  • Write short stories, not your whole life
  • Write for ONE grandchild, not the world

Good enough is perfect for family.

THE STORY BLOCKS METHOD
Every story uses the same three parts. No writer’s block, no blank page panic:

  1. MEMORY SPARK – What started it (flour on your shoes, boots on the step)
  2. SENSORY DETAIL – What you saw, heard, smelled, felt
  3. LESSON FOR YOU – What you want them to know about life

Margaret, 78, had told her bakery story for three years but never wrote it because she wanted to “do it right.” With Story Blocks she finished in 18 minutes. Her grandson read it at Christmas. He didn’t notice grammar. He noticed the flour.

INSIDE, YOU’LL FIND:

  • Large-print worksheets for handwriting at the end of each chapter
  • 20-minute sessions – stop when tired, come back tomorrow
  • The Grandchild-First Mindset: write “Dear Emma,” and the pressure disappears
  • 50+ Memory Spark prompts for when you think “I can’t remember anything”
  • How to handle fuzzy memories honestly without making things up
  • Easy-read tips for handwriting, spacing, and layout
  • Simple ways to add photos without scrapbooking or tech skills
  • A gentle 30-day plan to finish a small collection you can actually give

YOU’LL LEARN HOW TO WRITE:

  • Chapter 1: Why Your Stories Matter More Than Perfect Writing
  • Chapter 2: The Grandchild-First Mindset
  • Chapter 3: Gathering Memory Sparks Without Stress
  • Chapter 4: The Story Blocks Method (step-by-step)
  • Chapter 5: Childhood Stories – school, chores, first jobs
  • Chapter 6: Love, Work, and Hard Times – with honesty and hope
  • Chapter 7: When Memory Is Fuzzy
  • Chapter 8: Making It Easy to Read
  • Chapter 9: Adding Photos and Keepsakes Simply
  • Chapter 10: Finishing in 30 Days
  • Chapter 11: Sharing It With Family
  • Chapter 12: Keeping the Legacy Alive

WHO THIS IS FOR:

Grandparents and great-grandparents 60+ who want to leave stories, not stuff. Anyone who can tell a story out loud but freezes at a blank page. People with arthritis, low vision, or no computer — this was designed for aging eyes and tired hands.
This is NOT for writing a 300-page autobiography or getting published. It’s for one small, important audience: your grandchildren.
YOUR STORIES ARE ALREADY GOOD ENOUGH.
You don’t need a new skill. Writing is just talking slowly enough to catch the words.
Pick one grandchild. Pick one memory you’ve told before. Give yourself 20 minutes.
In a month, you’ll have a stack of stories that will outlast any gift you could buy. Don’t let another holiday pass with your best stories only spoken.
Start today. They are waiting to hear you.

10 reviews for How to Write Your Life Stories for Your Grandchildren

  1. I never wrote nothing before. I am not good at school stuff. This book give me little questions like “what was your kitchen like?” I just answer them. Now I have 3 stories for Lily my granddaughter. It was easy.

  2. As a retired engineer I value clear process. Mr Stephenson’s chapter on organising by theme rather than strict dates was particularly useful. It allowed me to convert forty years of disparate memories into a coherent narrative my grandchildren can actually follow.

  3. thought this would be like homework lol. it’s not. it’s dead simple, like 10 mins with a brew, do one prompt, done. the whole “no stress” thing on the cover is actually true for once.

  4. grandkids loved it. read em the bit about my first Raleigh bike. they proper laughed. good book init

  5. I was scared to write about the years after John died. Trevor doesn’t force you to dig up pain. He says, write what you want them to hold onto. That permission helped. I wrote about our rose garden instead, and it feels peaceful.

  6. Very practical. Page 34 has that timeline worksheet. I listed jobs 1965 to 1998, then slotted each memory underneath. Stops the rambling. My daughter said it’s the first time she’s read my stuff without getting lost.

  7. I sat and cried reading my own first draft. Not because it was sad. Because I realised if I don’t write down how my mum sang in the kitchen, my grandkids will never hear it. This book made it feel like writing a love letter, not a task

  8. I taught primary for 30 years so I know kids tune out. Stephenson’s tip to end every story with a question back to the child — “what would you have done?” — is gold. It turns a memory into a chat. My grandson actually replied in the margins.

  9. OMG THE PHOTO IDEA!!! I printed my 1972 wedding photo, stuck it in, and wrote the story around it for Alfie!!! He keeps asking to see “young nanny” again!!! Best bit of the whole book!!!

  10. my hands are bad with arthritis so typing is a nightmare. the section on using voice notes on your phone then just cleaning it up later was a game changer im now up to 12 recordings and my son types them out for me
